Ireland’s drug regulator has issued a warning about the over-use of sildenafil (Viagra®) in the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) on Thursday said it had received reports of sexual dysfunction in patients taking sildenafil. The MHRA has so far determined the safety of sildenafil.
The MHRA is investigating whether the use of sildenafil and other medicines is associated with increased sexual activity.
The MHRA has received reports of a number of cases of erectile dysfunction linked to the use of sildenafil, the MHRA said.
The MHRA said sildenafil was associated with an increase of up to 16 per cent in the number of people taking the drug in the first six months of 2019.
In July last year, Viagra, the brand name for sildenafil, was the first drug to be prescribed for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
Sildenafil was approved in Britain in August last year after the MHRA received information from the NHS that patients with erectile dysfunction, or who take nitrates for chest pain, had a higher risk of developing erectile dysfunction.
Sildenafil is a prescription medication used to treat erectile dysfunction in men. It contains the active ingredient sildenafil citrate. It belongs to a group of medicines called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors.
Sildenafil was introduced in 1998 and it was approved to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension, or PAH, as well as erectile dysfunction.
A previous version of Viagra had been approved for use in men but was not approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
It is also available as a generic alternative to the brand-name Viagra.
The MHRA said the use of sildenafil had been associated with an increase in sexual activity in men with ED and with a number of other health risks.
“As a result of these reports, the MHRA is undertaking an assessment to determine whether sildenafil is appropriate for patients with ED and other health risks and benefits,” the regulator said.
The MHRA has issued a warning to its patients about the drug’s safety.
